An Atari 2600 de-make of the SNES classic Super Mario Kart in the style of Pole Position and Fatal Run.

Made for the Retro Jam 2021.

THEME: SIDE-EFFECTS

You have a 1/4 chance of being poisoned by a "? " block. Poison lasts the duration of the race or until you use a power up. When poisoned, you go faster (as long as you have coins), but the controls are reversed and power ups have a 50/50 chance of backfiring, among a few other things...

CONTROLS

  • Left: A / Left Arrow
  • Right: D / Right Arrow
  • Jump: W / Up Arrow
  • Brake: S / Down Arrow
  • Fire: B
  • Pause: Space Bar

POINTS

  • 1st place = 9 points
  • 2nd place = 6
  • 3rd place = 3
  • 4th place = 1

Score 36 or more points to unlock a SUPER SECRET!

HINTS

Like Super Mario Kart, there is a boost start trick. Drivers have differently assigned values for acceleration, traction, and top speed. I find that Sushi is the best all around driver. For a challenge, try to win with Rilla or Rick. You have infinite lives, so keep playing until you win. Trust me, the super secret pay off is worth it.

All artwork assets were done by me. Atari font is public domain. Google 'Atari Fonts'.  Sound effects were sampled from various Atari 2600 games via emulator. This is written from scratch in plain old javascript and is compatible with all major desktop browsers.

Hey, I saw your Pac-Man remake I'm wondering if more will be made? They are accurate as fuck dude!

Thanks! I've got a few half-baked projects... but life gets busy. I did manage to finish the Gameboy version of Tetris which should be shared in my library.

Great to know

This was really cool!I liked the graphics!

Thanks for trying it out!

Pretty cool! :)
I like this demake. The sound, graphics and gameplay are spot-on.
Too bad you never see the other drivers because they dont seem to use items?

Thanks for looking! Yeah... I ran out of time to do too much in the way of A.I. If you're handily beating the computer drivers, you can change the difficulty setting under the options menu at the title screen which makes them faster. You can also take a different driver like Rick or Rilla- who are faster but don't turn as well.
